Volunteer Spotlight- Khalil Wright

Khalil Wright is just one of the many volunteers who serve consistently, not seeking recognition, but who reflect the heart of Christ in their commitment to community and service. Wright started volunteering with the DeSoto County Dream Center after connecting with a staff member at a business networking event where he first learned about our weekly Leadership program that uses leadership materials in small group environments to help develop strong character traits and help prepare middle and high school students for a successful future.

Wright has been showing up each week on Mondays for four years now, supporting the large group gathering and facilitating a small group with high school boys. While we had multiple staff out on maternity and medical leave recently, Wright was asked to take on more responsibility by teaching the large gathering lessons on biblical character development.

“One thing I’ve learned as I interact with kids and engage in relationships is that you don’t really know what you have for somebody. Something you think is so minute that you share might have an impact on someone,” Wright said. “I don’t think I’ve missed a Monday since I started! I just love showing up.” Wright grew up in the Horn Lake community and students are able to easily relate to him and the experiences he shares.

“Hearing students say that I was a person who they felt impacted their lives and speaking to the consistency of me showing up, and that we had built a bond that exceeded even what I thought it was- that was a great moment,” shared Wright.

We are honored to spotlight Khalil Wright, the way that he repeatedly shows up for students in the Leadership program and his commitment to relationships. It is because of Khalil’s (and so many other faithful volunteers) consistently encouraging presence and the way he cares for students, that the DeSoto County Dream Center is able to invest in students and families the way we do.
